Did you know that today (May 12th)  is “National Limerick Day” ?

This celebrated day became nationally recognized somewhere around the year 1984.  It is the day we celebrate the birthday of English artist, illustrator, author and poet Edward Lear (May 12, 1812 – Jan 29, 1888).  I know, I didn’t know who he was either, but he is evidently the person responsible for popularizing the Limerick, which is a poetry style that has fun with short poems by using rhythm, humor and giving us something unexpected!  I love that part about him!  Here is an example of a Limerick written by Edward:

                        There was a Young Lady whose chin

                        Resembled the point of a pin;

                        So she had it made sharp, and purchased a harp.

                        And played several tunes with her chin.

So… in honor of National Limerick Day, I have written one myself!  Especially for you all !!  (Disclaimer..  I cannot be held responsible for any pain this may cause you.  I am just a girl..  writing a poem…  making a fool of myself to everyone! )

My hope is this…  you all will take a short break from whatever you are doing and write a short Limerick of your own and then comment below and share it with the world like I just did!

                                                            Gina’s Limerick

I feel so silly writing this poem.

   Good thing I’m doing it from home.

Now when I go out,

   Everyone will shout,
